HEALTH-CONSCIOUS FIG FANS EAT UP FAT-FREE NEWTONS (2024)

Fig Newton lovers with cholesterol problems used to read "tropical oil" on the label and pass the sandwich cookie by. But no more! Nabisco's new version is fat-free with no cholesterol. The 12-ounce package sells for $2.49.

Don Russell: "These Fig Newtons are not bad, not bad at all. We found our cookie bars to be appealing and soft with a pleasant fruit flavor; however, fat-free does not mean calorie-free - these cookies still pack in 70 calories each. Nabisco's new cookie for health conscious consumers is a good one, but it would be nice if the price tag were just a wee bit lower."Nihla Lake: "Our family has always loved Fig Newtons, so we were a little wary about any changes to an already great product. But to our surprise and relief, non-fat Newts were just as good, maintaining that moist chewy fig flavor with the added bonus of no-fat. We'll keep eating 'em!"

Judy Slack Wilson: "I am not a Fig Newton fan, but I do know what they taste like. The fat-free version is identical, no change in the flavor at all. For those watching their fat intake, the fat-free Newtons are great, but they are still high in calories."

Edyth Jensen: "These are pretty good and for weight watchers, they are something to have around when a `snack attack' occurs. The taste difference is very minimal and the cost is comparable."

Linda C. Tingey: "Fig Newtons are my favorite cookies in all the world. I've been a fan since I was a little girl. And now that I'm older, I can do without the fat. It's nice to see that your favorite cookie is now fat-free. I will buy these again, they are definitely on my list."

Rich Firmage: "It's been a long time since I've tried Fig Newtons. These are OK, but not my favorite. The fact that they are fat-free is great and that they don't have any cholesterol is an added bonus, but they don't taste good enough to get me to buy them again."

Conclusion: These "Newts" just got better - no fat! Our Fig Newton lovers thought the great taste was still just fine. One tester said he didn't eat regular Newtons and didn't think the fat-free were such a big deal. But if you're a health-conscious Fig Newton fan, you'll be doing a guilt-free 50-yard dash to the grocery store!
