If you're looking for delicious smoothie recipes but without yoghurt then don't worry, I've got you covered! I've rounded up 31 of the best smoothie recipes without yoghurt from around the internet for you! All of these smoothies can easily be made dairy free and plant based, depending on your dietary requirements. While I love yoghurt, I don't always feel like adding it to my smoothies. And if you love a smoothie with a creamy texture then I've got plenty of recipes here for you too!

How to Make a Healthy Smoothie
Smoothies can be a great way to add extra fruit, vegetables, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates into your diet. Plus they can be really handy to have as a healthy snack or easy make and go healthy breakfast. However there are many smoothie recipes out there that contain a lot more fruit than you would normally consume and it can be easy to think that this is healthy. And while fruit is a very healthy food, it still contains sugar in the form of fructose, which should still be limited. Here are some of my top tips for making a smoothie healthy:
- make it macro nutrient balanced - make sure you are including healthy fats, complex carbohydrates and protein in the smoothie so that it provides sustained energy and doesn't spike your blood sugar levels too much.
- don't use juice - I recommend using nut milk or plant-based milk, regular milk, water or coconut water as the base of your smoothie to avoid adding too much sugar. I don't recommend using orange juice, apple juice or other fruit juice.
- avoid adding high sugar ingredients like ice cream. I also prefer to avoid added sugars like maple syrup, honey or sugar.
I've listed my favourite simple ingredients below for making a balanced smoothie.
Healthy Fats
- nut and seed butters - almond butter, peanut butter, cashew butter, tahini or sunflower seed butter.
- nuts and seeds - hemp seeds, chia seeds, ground flaxseeds, almonds, cashews
- avocado - avocado is a great source of complex carbohydrates, fibre and good fats!
Complex Carbohydrates
- frozen fruit or fresh fruit - like frozen or fresh strawberries, bananas, mango, raspberries or blueberries.
- vegetables - use leafy greens like kale, spinach or cucumber for your favourite green smoothie recipe. You can also use steamed and cooled pumpkin or sweet potato or add raw carrot or beetroot.
- rolled oats
Protein
- your favourite protein powder - I use a vanilla flavoured protein powder but you could also use un unflavoured, natural protein powder.
- cottage cheese - if you're not avoiding dairy then cottage cheese is a good option for adding protein and creaminess.
- milk - using whole milk or soy milk will add protein.
- nuts & seeds - nuts and seeds and nut and seed butters contain protein as well as healthy fats, fibre and a whole range of vitamins and minerals.
The Best Milk for Smoothies
I've listed below my go-to milks for smoothies you can always use regular milk or water if you prefer.
- almond milk
- soy milk
- coconut milk beverage
- oat milk
- cashew milk
Tips for Making A Creamy Smoothie Without Yoghurt
If you love a creamier, thicker smoothie then try using the ingredients below.
- frozen banana and other frozen fruits.
- coconut milk beverage frozen into ice cubes
- nut milks or nut and seed butters
- if you're avoiding yoghurt because you're avoiding dairy then you can use a good non-dairy yoghurt like coconut yoghurt to give you that creamier texture but without the dairy.
Storage
Most smoothies are best consumed as soon as they've been made. If you do have leftover smoothie that you don't want to waste then I would recommend either pouring into ice cube trays and freezing, ready to add to your next smoothie. Or pour into an ice block mould and make smoothie ice blocks.
Equipment for Making Homemade Smoothies
To make your favourite homemade healthy smoothie recipe you will need a high-speed blender, food processor or bullet blender. You might also need measuring cups and spoons.
